Shawnee National Forest

The Shawnee National Forest is a beautiful region located in southern Illinois that contains a wide variety of plant-life and terrain.  Its many attractions include hiking, camping, fishing, and rock-climbing.  Whether viewing the surreal rock formations at the Garden of the Gods, climbing down the snaking Little Grand Canyon, or boating on the shimmering Cascade lake, you’ll easily find outdoor entertainment for the whole family.

The Shawnee National Forest was established by president Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939.  Most of the land at the time was exhausted farmland, but through many forest rehabilitation programs it was restored into the rich and varied forestland you find there today.

While you are exploring the Shawnee Forest, we welcome you to stop by our restaurant, Mase’s Place, to try some of southern style cooking, like our famous ribs covered in our made-from-scratch barbecue sauce.  We also recommend the following attractions, while you are in the area:

  • Little Grand Canyon is located within minutes of Mase’s Place.  It is a long hollow canyon eroded through the rocks by a trickling stream.  You can follow the trail down the middle of the canyon, and hike through the forest and see gorgeous views of the muddy river.
  • Giant City State Park has several hikes through forest and rocky pathways, as well as a lodge with historic cabins.
  • The Shawnee Wine Trail is a series of wineries in the region, each with their own selections of wine and lush and scenic vineyards.  Don’t forget to stop by Mase’s Place for a tasty and fun dinner!  We are located on the western side of the trail.
