Little Grand Canyon
Located in the Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois, the Little Grand Canyon is a wondrous outdoor attraction, just minutes away from Mase’s Place! After years of erosion from a trickling stream, a long canyon has been chiseled into the rocks. Visitors may hike down and up the center of the canyon, viewing strange rock formations and glistening waterfalls. The hike is fun and challenging for anyone able to clamber down the chiseled steps. The hike continues at the bottom along the side of a gurgling creek, through the areas rich forests.
Aside from the canyon hike, which itself it worth the trip, there are three and a half miles of path trails. From atop the ridge trail you will be able to see the Muddy River as well as the Mississippi flood planes. The surrounding forest is know for its plant and animal diversity, and is the home of several species of song birds.
The Little Grand Canyon is located south of Murphysboro, off of highway 127 (get directions from Murphysboro). After you are finished exploring, be sure to leave time to stop by our restaurant, Mase’s Place, located only 1 mile south on Hickory Road (view directions from Little Grand Canyon). Try some of our home-style southern cooking, like our barbecue ribs, white fish fry, or our Brody Burger. We also have a full bar and sometimes musical entertainment! We hope you stop by!
